Alter Elbtunnel: Sound Ornamentik

Cevdet Erek works with sound, space, and rhythm. In his sound installations he intervenes in the preexisting structures and architectural situations experimentally. Starting out from scenes in films such as Wim Wenders’s The American Friend (1977), Erek explores the old Elbtunnel as a place of encounter. The tunnel was inaugurated festively in 1911 as modernist architecture that combined utility and beauty. Working to encounter the effect of sound as ornament, Erek’s installation interweaves the various rhythms of the passers-by with an acoustic examination of the majolica reliefs that symbolize the underwater world of the Elbe in the tunnel.
