Wassermusik

The artist and musician Michaela Melián works with multimedia installations and sound to address sociopolitical and historical issues, in particular relating to memory. For her new work Wassermusik (Water Music), she refers to the ships greeting site in Wedel, which anachronistically plays the national anthem of the relevant transnational shipping company for each cruise or trading ship that arrives. Starting out from Hanns Eisler’s German national anthem Auferstanden aus Ruinen (Risen from Ruins), Melián in her new composition links East and West. The Elbe has its source in Krkonoše (Czech Republic) and disembogues into the North Sea.
