Stadtgespräch. Metropolitan Perspectives #4
Urban Panic. Anti-muslim Urbanism.
Dr. Vassilis S. Tsianos (Sociologist, Hamburg)
With Pegida racism is present as a “voice of the street” on a large scale. How does city planning in European cities deal with migration as an urbanistic demand? Whilst ethnic minorities are referred to, above all, as the “other”, racism often remains a blind spot in the planning scenarios. The relationship between urban space and migration processes, as well as the construction of threatening scenarios through so-called parallel societies will be presented. Tsianos terms the specific representation of the relationship of migration and city ‘urban panic’. How is this changing current perceptions of the public space? The discussion examines the constellation of migration, racism and urban development in Hamburg using the example of various policies of fear.
