ParaMuseum befasst sich mit dem grundlegenden Problem des Ethnografischen Museums, im Kontext von Kolonialismus und Rassismus gegründet worden zu sein. Welche Rolle können Ethnografische Museen heute einnehmen? Kann es kritisch mit der eigenen Geschichte umgehen im Austausch mit der aktuellen (Post-) Kolonialismusforschung? In Ablehnung des Konzepts des Museums als Ort der Wissensproduktion bietet ParaMuseum eine „Kontaktzone“ (James Clifford) für Diskussionen Reflexionen und Emotionen rund um das  Ethnologische Museum und dessen koloniale Vergangenheit.

Das Projekt The Unrooted untersucht die Geschichte der botanischen Migration und Grenzüberschreitungen in Hamburg-Altona. Durch den Tausch und die Verteilung von gefundenen oder gezüchteten Pflanzen soll auf die historisch-wirtschaftlichen Effekte der Pflanzenmigration in Europa verwiesen werden, insbesondere auf das durch den Besitz von Samenerbgut bedingte ökonomische Wachstum. Aktuelle Fragen der Landwirtschaft in der EU werden genauso thematisiert wie deren globale Folgen. BesucherInnen sind eingeladen, eine Pflanze zu tauschen oder ihr Wissen über Pflanzen und deren Migrationsgeschichten zu teilen.

ParaMuseum deals with the Ethnographic Museum and its basic problematic of being established in the context of colonialism and rassism. Which role can Ethnographic Museums play today? Could it establish a critical apporach to its own past in exchange with current (post-) colonial studies? Refusing the concept of the museum as a place for knowledge production ParaMuseum offers a “contact zone” (James Clifford) for discussions, reflections, and emotions around the Ethnographic Museum and its colonial past.

The project The Unrooted examines the history of botanical migration and border crossings in Hamburg-Altona. Through the exchange and the distribution of found or cultivated plants the historical-economic effects of plant migration in Europe will be referred to and in particular to the economic growth which results from owning the genotype of seeds. Current issues of agriculture in the EU are addressed as well as their global consequences. Visitors are invited to exchange a plant or to share their knowledge about plants and their migration histories.
