Jenni Olson ist eine US-amerikanische Filmkuratorin, Filmemacherin, Autorin und LGBTQ-Filmhistorikerin. 2015 premierte Olsons film The Royal Road auf dem Sundance Film Festival. Der Film wurde ausgezeichnet als bester LGBTQ Film auf dem 2015 Ann Arbor Film Festival und erhielt eine Juryerwähnung (Avant Garde & Genre Special) auf dem Buenos Aires International Independent Cinema Festival.

Ein Film über Film, so ließe sich The Royal Road zusammenfassen. Das Leitmotiv dieses Filmessays ist die urbane Nostalgie als schmerzende wie sehnsüchtige Hinwendung zur Vergangenheit. Und so wird über Filme wie Hitchcocks Vertigo reflektiert, wie auch die spanische Kolonialgeschichte Kaliforniens erzählt. Dazu berichtet das Voice-Over, das sich als Tomboy vorstellt, von dem unerwiderten Begehren zweier Frauen während ihrer Coming-outs. Der in statischen Sequenzen gedrehte Film führt nicht nur auf der erzählerischen Ebene ein Nachdenken über Film vor, er setzt es auch formal fort. Die urbanen Landschaftsaufnahmen entfalten eine große Sogkraft, doch das Versprechen von Film – die Abbildung von Menschen – wird nicht eingelöst. Hingegen eine Forderung des feministischen Films – die Zerstörung des voyeuristischen Blickes – vorgeführt wird. (LSF)


An drei Abenden zeigt Stadtkuratorin Hamburg Filme, Videos, Dokumentationen zu Stadt und Feminismus. KünstlerInnen spiegeln im filmischen Raum urbane Körperpolitiken aus (queer-) feministischen Perspektiven wider und befragen vergesellschaftete Geschlechterverhältnisse des öffentlichen Raums. In den Video- und Filmprogrammen werden Perspektiven aus über 50 Jahren Kunst- und Filmgeschichte gezeigt und kommentiert. Let’s Risk the Body eröffnet die Diskussion für das finale Sommerprogramm im Mai 2016. Welchen Feminismus braucht es heute angesichts von globalem Finanzkapitalismus, Migration und Transgender (oder Agender)-Bewegungen — und welche urbanen Commons lassen sich aktuell formulieren jenseits der Kämpfe um Reproduktionsverhältnisse, Immaterielle Arbeit und Fürsorge?

Jenni Olson is an US-American film curator, filmmaker, author, and LGBTQ film historian. In 2015 Olson’s film, The Royal Road premiered at the  Sundance Film Festival. The film won the award as Best LGBTQ Film at the 2015 Ann Arbor Film Festival as well as the Avant Garde & Genre Special Jury Mention from the Buenos Aires International Independent Cinema Festival.

A film about film is how one could summarize The Royal Road. The leitmotif of this essayistic movie is urban nostalgia as a painful and longing devotion to the past. It reflects about films like Hitchcocks Vertigo and the history of Spanish colonialism in California. Along with it a voice-over who introduces itself as Tomboy, tells the story of the unrequited love experienced by two women during their coming out. The film is shot in static sequences and thereby reflects on the conditions of film making not only in its narrative level but also formally. The urban cityscapes sceneries have an enourmously captivating effect but fail to redeem film’s greatest promise – the depiction of people – thus fulfilling a central requirement of feminist film: the destruction of the voyeuristic gaze. On three evenings Stadtkuratorin Hamburg will present films, videos, and documentaries about the city and feminism. In the filmic space artists reflect urban body politics from (queer) feminist perspectives and question socialized gender relations in public space. In the video and film programs perspectives from over 50 years of art and film history will be shown and commented. Let’s Risk the Body will open the discussion for the final summer program in May 2016. Which Feminism do we need today in the face of financial capitalism, migration and transgender (or agender) movements—and thus which urban commons could be formulated currently beyond the struggles with reproduction, immaterial labor, and care work?
